Community Foundation’s LEAF project

Leaf Project
In 2009 the Greggs Foundation agreed a three year extension to LEAF. LEAF is a ground-breaking initiative of which the Greggs Foundation is a founder member. The fund makes grants to charitable organisations to encourage people to take action on global environmental issues. Grants are made to help projects that will demonstrate what can be achieved so others can follow the good example. With the support of the Greggs Foundation and several other donors, LEAF made grants totalling over £260,000 in 2009.

The grant extension of £150,000,  to be paid over three  years, will be managed on the Foundation’s behalf by the Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.

An excellent example of the work of LEAF is the support given to Byker Bridge Housing Association (BBHA). A £10,000 grant has helped BBHA establish a composting project which takes garden and kitchen waste from Ouseburn Farm and four properties, and also manure and waste products from livestock at the farm. This has reduced landfill and provided top quality soil to grow fresh local produce.
