About Us
The Greggs Foundation was established in 1987 by Ian Gregg, founder of the Greggs bakery retailer. It was established to put something back into the communities in which Greggs operates. It started from very humble origins, making small grants in the North East of England and has developed into a professional organisation donating in excess of £1million per year.
Formerly known as the Greggs Trust, the charity was renamed the Foundation in 2009 with a renewed mission of 'making a difference to the lives of disadvantaged people in the heart of Greggs local communities'. The Greggs Foundation aims to achieve this mission through the delivery of its four main programmes:
- Breakfast Clubs - The Foundation makes grants and provides freshly baked Greggs bread to help thousands of disadvantaged children to get a healthy start to their day.
- Major Grants - Providing grants to charitable organisations in the North East of England.
- Hardship Fund - Helping families in the North East of England who are in extreme financial hardship with grants made through relevant social organisations.
- Regional Grants - Supporting charitable organisations around the UK with grants of up to £2,000.
The Foundation is managed by an independent Trustee board, and has three full-time and one part time staff. Volunteers from within Greggs PLC form our regional grants committees. Income is derived from a range of sources including voluntary donations, investment income and fundraising activities and in 2009 this income exceeded £1.3 million.
